The Importance of Taking One Step at a Time for a Fulfilling Life
We have all heard that we need to just take one step at a time. Focus on the next task in hand, take each day as it comes etc etc. But I want to highlight how important this really is and how we need to do just that.
When you start something new, you can't do everything all at once and then expect the journey to be over, we do one thing at a time. If you want to start going to the gym you can't do all of your week's workout in one session. Every day, every morning sit down and think, what can I achieve today? What small step can I make today? Go to the gym, just once, even if you don't go for long, just do it. Then the next day do something else, do a little more even, go back to the gym and go longer or push yourself a bit more. If you just keep doing this and keep pushing those little steps you will look back and see that your starting point is miles away, you have got so far and it will be such a good feeling.
When I was suffering badly with depression I knew something had to change, looking back now I didn't realise just how bad I was at the time but I still knew that I needed to get out of the shadow of this illness. I started taking little steps, just one thing that made me feel better, then eventually another thing that motivated me, then when I started seeing the changes with these small steps I began to have hope which I think is the best catalyst for turning your life around. As soon as you have hope you can see your destination much clearer and then you are on a roll. Next thing you know you are inches away. If I had tried a million things at once and really pushed myself too hard I would have been overwhelmed and been so focused on the different actions that I was taking that my focus would have completely been away from the goal and therefore the destination would have been unclear and unreachable.
I like to think to myself every day "What would the average person do?" because at the end of the day I am pretty average, I grew up in an average family with an average income in an average home. The average person would probably skip a workout session some days, put off walking the dog for a day or two or even just settle with life and be content with the hand they have been dealt. Do I want to be average? Do I want to live an average, mundane life where I just get by? No, I want my life to be outstanding, interesting, fun and exhilarating. So each day I ask myself that question and I do one more thing, one step up from what the average person would do. I go to the gym, I stay up late working on something, I cook a meal from scratch so I can ensure my health. Now all of a sudden, I'm not average, I am extraordinary. Just by making that one tiny step more than the average person would. This means ever day I am making small victories and going to bed feeling pretty good with myself at the end of each day. Soon you will get used to these extra steps you are making and soon enough you are ready to take it up a level and so on.
Don't measure your success on what you have achieved, measure it on what steps you have taken towards your goal. If you were to take a step each day, at the end of each day you can be proud that you moved one step closer to your goal. Be proud of those little achievements and then be even more prouder when you can look back and see how all those small actions added up into this amazing outcome. If we didn't praise ourselves along our journey then we would lose all motivation before we even got close to our goals. We need to make sure we are giving ourselves a pat on the back each time we achieve something, anything.
So what little steps are you making towards your goals?
