How to Save Money on Your Groceries

We all need to eat and the best way to eat economically is to eat at home. Groceries can still add up though so here are a few pointers on how to save money on your shopping trip.

1. Do not be tempted by snacks

I am always tempted just to get packets of biscuits or crisps but I resist every time now. Not only is it bad for your waistline, it's bad for your wallet as well. There is no need to keep these types of snacks in your cupboards if you are trying to be healthy and save money. I won't miss the big bag of biscuits if I don't buy it. So, resist and just buy what you need.

2. Join the loyalty program

To be honest, I am yet to follow this own tip myself. I have been meaning to sign up to my local grocery store's loyalty card for so long but have not gotten round to it yet. It is so important to do this when you shop as you can earn points each time you spend money there that can add up and equal money off future shops. A lot of the cards actually track what you buy as well so they can tailor vouchers to you and your needs. For no extra cost why not?

3. Meal Plan

I think this is the most important tip. Every Saturday I sit down and plan all my meals for the coming week. Then on the Sunday, we get everything. This means that we have no wasted food and we are only buying exactly what we need. This also works for when you are trying to eat healthier.

I have created a Meal Plan Sheet that I use every week and you can download it for free below.

4.  Have a Leftovers Day once a week

Now, no matter how well you plan your meals you will always have some leftovers, especially if like me you only cook for two people. So every Saturday I see what I have left in the fridge from the week, along with my staple cupboard food and frozen goods and rustle up a meal out of that. This way it cuts down on the waste and offers a free meal each week.

Because of these tips, I am saving money on my groceries every week and therefore can put more into savings and paying off debts. I feel like I am making a real difference in my finances with these small but important changes.
